Given the old git repos of former site iterations, see what we can find about older sites, the OG crystal site, and old homelab hardware.

Ported from GitLab matt/website#20 (2025-10-24) when GitLab was retired; the original repo is archived at https://gitlab.goober.cloud/matt/website/-/issues/20.

Research dump for this issue, gathered autonomously so the writeup has raw material.
Nothing here is published — it's findings for you to turn into prose.

What the old repos actually contain

  • matt/oldwebsite-jekyll — 33 commits, but the content was dumped as a single commit
("old jekyll slop", 2025-10-28). There is no deep git history to mine: the repo tracks the
final state of the Jekyll era, not its evolution.
  • matt/oldwebsite-static — 1 commit, and it IS site 2: style.css plus
    index.html, linux/, contact.html, onions.html, bucknellwtf.html, bob/.
  • Both are mirrored on Forgejo with full history (that mirroring is why these are readable at all).

Corrections/additions to the site-history page

  • The first site was on xhec.us — so the hostnames read xhec.us -> xhec.dev v1 ->
xhec.dev v2 -> mattcompton.dev. The page currently only names sites 1-4 by that scheme.
  • Old pages link the Crystal project as getcryst.al (now dead; the whole
crystal-linux GitHub org is archived, 39 repos, all pointing at their new home).
  • Old pages also link github.com/crystal-linux/branding/raw/main/banners/tuxad.png — a
Crystal banner Matt embedded on several pages, if that's useful colour.

The #TODO on the site-history page ("find a link to the Crystal CSS")
Attempted and not resolved — recording it so nobody repeats the search:

  • Matt's reused stylesheet is ~1.9 KB with an "IBM Plex Mono", "JetBrains Mono", "Fira Mono"
    stack and a linear-gradient(to top, #111111, #424242) body.
  • The crystal-linux org's getcryst.al, site and webforge repos were all checked: no file
matches, by fingerprint or by exact line.
  • Only 4 versions of getcryst.al/style.css exist in the Wayback Machine (earliest page snapshot
    2021-10-17, stylesheet snapshots 2022-01-19, 2022-08-16, 2022-09-02). The 2022-01-19 one
shares #424242 + linear-gradient but is 13.6 KB with no monospace stack; the others share
nothing. So Matt's copy is a derivative or a private version, not any archived revision.
  • Conclusion: the original is probably unrecoverable, or lived somewhere the Wayback Machine
    never crawled.
The #TODO marker has been left in place rather than filled with a link that
can't be verified — a wrong link is worse than an acknowledged gap.
